Some of my personal memories

My grandparents lived up South Hobart for most of their early married years. The first house was on Stoney Steps Road, the second at Waterworks Road, South Hobart. Both houses were burnt down during bush fires, prompting them to move out into the northern suburbs of Goodwood.

Derwent was a foreman at the Hobart Gas Company, located down near the Hotel Grand Chancellor. He worked there for many years. Derwent, like his two sons, Geoff & Graeme, loved animals. I can vaguely remember him from my young days but I can always remember hearing the dogs and the chickens that he had. This hobby seemed to carry on, for as long as I can remember, my father also had dogs and chickens, even today he has a small menagerie of animals on his 3 acre block.

They moved to a small house in Goodwood, at 94 Renfrew Circle. It was here where Derwent suffered a heart attack one day after work. Kathleen was in the kitchen making Derwent a cup of tea when she heard him fall to the ground. She ran out to see what had happened but there was little she could do.

I was nearly 5yo when Derwent passed away and am afraid to say that I cannot even see him in my memories anymore. Even with the only photo I have of a blurry face, it does not look like anyone that I would recognise.

I was told that he was a hard father, but he instilled great values to his own 4 children, of all whom he would have been very proud of if he was still alive today.
