Biography

Elizabeth Ellen Gertrude Cook was born in 1900. She was the first child to Robert Cook and Sarah Cash. She passed away in 1986. [1]

Birth

Elizabeth Ellen Gertrude Cook, hence known as Nona, was the first born and eldest daughter of Robert Andrew & Elizabeth Sarah Cook. She was born in Bathurst Street, Hobart. Oddly enough her christened name on the birth records is shown as Nona and she was known her whole life as Nona. <#01>

Early Life

Not much is known about Nona's early life except what has been found from researching archival documents. She married twice and as far as we can tell never had any children.

Marriage #1

On the 27th April, 1922 Nona married Edward Charles Jenkins. They were married at St Michael's Church in West Hobart. According to the Tasmanian Electoral Roll of 1928, Edward and Nona lived at Ouse where Edward is listed as being employed for station work. <#02>

In 1936 they are shown as living at 109 Warwick Street, Hobart, with Edward listed as being employed at the Zinc Works at Risdon, East Moonah. <#03>

A year later they ate listed as being a resident at 27 Harrington Street, Hobart. Edward was still listed as being employed by Zinc Works. <#04>

In 1943 Edward Jenkins filed for a divorce from Nona. According to his application he had been unwell and had been put onto a special diet. He had requested Nona to give up her work and come home to look after him. Nona apparently indicated that she was not content at home and left him. She had been working at the Woodbridge Hotel since 1937. After numerous refusals to come home. It is mentioned that Edward paid for Nona's expenses when she went to Vaucluse Hospital but not sure what this was for. <#05>

On May 8th, 1944, Mr Justice Hutchins issues a degree nisi, granting the divorce application presented by Edward Jenkins. <#06>

Marriage #2

Sometime between her divorce in 1944 and 1959 Nona got married again, this time to Bertie Ernest Rennie. Not much is known about Bertie except records found in the Electoral rolls. Dad says he remembers 'Bert' being involved with race horses.

They were listed as living at 15 Tank Street, New Norfolk when Bert died in 1959. <#07>

After Bert's death Nona moved to 15 Reid Street, Moonah where she remained for many years. We never had much to do with her, Dad, remembering when his father died, said Nona was around their place the same day to take back the utility that Keith used to drive around the place. After this nobody really kept in contact with Nona. In her later years Nona moved to live with her nephew & his family in Beaconsfield.

Nona passed away on the 17th September 1986 at Beaconsfield and was buried with Bertie at Cornelian Bay on the 19th September 1986. <#08>

Nona's last will was read leaving $3000 to Brian John Hitchens of 15 Reid Street, Moonah, and the remainder to be divided between: <#09>

1> Anthony Kevin Lorriman of Hill Street, West Hobart

2> Canine Defence League

3> Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
