Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Eleanor (Cooke) Groves was a Virginia colonist.

Direct Ancestor of Jimmy Carter

Origin

Elinor (Eleanor) was born in 1633 in Bristol, England.[1] Sometimes referred to as "Bristol, Gloucestershire," the city is actually also a county.[2] She was a daughter of William Cooke and Mary Miles.[3]

Her birth date may be an estimate, based on other known historical dates

Marriages

Elinor married twice.

  • She married Thomas Carter (William, John, Thomas, Richard) was born 1625 in England, and died 1669 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.[1]

"Inventory of the estate of my deceased husband, Thomas Carter. Signed Elinor Groves. R. Sept. 9, 1673." [4]

  • She married, before 9 Sep 1673, to William Groves.

Appraisal of William Groves' estate was presented by "Mrs. Elinor Groves" on "21st of 9 mo. 1677" (21 Nov 1677) and was recorded on 9 Feb 1678[/9?].[4]

Death and Legacy

Eleanor probably died at Isle of Wight County, Virginia, where she and her husband, William Groves, lived. We do not know the date, as we have no known record of her death.

Her son, Thomas, is considered an ancestor of Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States.[1]

Children

Child of Eleanor and Thomas Carter:

  1. Thomas Carter, Jr. born c. 1652 in Isle of Wight Co., VA; died 1710 in Isle of Wight Co., VA; mar Magdaline Moore[1]

Noticed that she's not attached to her parents. At first glance, I don't see an explanation of disputed origins. . .

I know this comment is three years old, but I noticed that the source that proves her parents has a broken link. I looked at the bios of the parents, only for no proof of Eleanor's parentage. Maybe we should just keep the couple disconnected from Eleanor with an explanation in the research notes of why.

Hi Cynthia , I found a couple sources that Elinor married William Groves after Thomas died . 1. Thomas Carter Sr. Notes- Photos and Stories.-FamilySerch.org. Then 2 Chapman Isle of Wight Wills. Also a reference that states. ""William and Mary Cooke convey to Thomas Carter junr.sunne that of Thomas Carter late of county ... 400a. " is all that reference states. I'm trying to find the rest of it somewhere. Maybe be a clue to his father. It might not be William. I'm open. I guess there is also a reference to her marriage in Jeff Carter's book. I couldn't get the site to open for me. I ordered the book. I need to see his notes section it total. The sources I listed above however are in opposition to Dr. Barry Hayes who believes Thomas was William of Surry's son. Elinors death date would have been after 9 Sept 1673 when according to these sources her name was Elinor Groves. I found the whole source. I have to check the dates. I think it means this Thomas and his son. But another source says the land belonged to Maj. Thomas. Then this Thomas and then his son. Im watching a girafe have her baby. So later.

I have removed Maj Thomas Carter as husband of Elinor. If you review the notes in this profile, you will see that there is another Thomas Carter b. 1610 who is not the same as the Thomas Carter who is the husband of Elinor.
Yes, I absolutely do think so. Good catch. I have merged. Thanks!

Hi Cynthia , could this profile Miles-2512 perhaps be a match for this Elinor. I think it might be attached to the wrong Thomas Carter. I think you are probably the most knowledgeable Thomas Carter person.
