Biography

Jean is born in Minneapolis in about 1902, the daughter of Annie Paterson (c1872-1943) and Frederick Cooke (1849-1917). Both parents were born in Canada. Her father had come to the United States in about 1879 and (apparently) gone back to Canada to marry Annie in 1892. Annie came to the United States right after the wedding in 1892. Annie Paterson was Frederick Cooke’s third wife as his first two wives had died young.

The first record of Jean is the 1910 census where she can be found as an eight-year old living with her parents and a brother in Minneapolis. Her father dies in 1917 and in the 1920 census she is living with her mother and brother in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota (just north of Minneapolis). Her name is given as “June M. Kooke.”

Sometime between the 1920 census and the 1930 census, Jean marries Albert G. ARNOLD (c1882-?). Albert was born in Indiana. Not much is known about Albert other than he was born in Indiana. In the 1920 census, the only Albert G. Arnold that fits what is known about the one Jean married, is a single person, born in about 1891 in Indiana, who is living by himself in Cuyahoga, Ohio. It cannot be determined with certainty that this is the correct person.

In the 1903 census, Jean and Albert are living in Bluffton, Indiana. Bluffton is about 40 kilometres south of Fort Wayne. They have living with them their seven-year old daughter, Margaret D Arnold who was born in Michigan. And Jean’s mother, the 55-year old Annie (Paterson) Cooke, is also living with them. Jean and Albert apparently lived in Michigan for some time between 1920 and 1930.

In 1940 census, Jean and Albert are in Proviso, Cook County, Illinois (ie, Chicago). Jean’s mother, the 65-year old Annie, is still with them. Buttheir daughter is not. She has married and is living near by. According to the census, Arnold works as a salesman in the “novelty” industry and makes $500 a year. Jean is a “demonstrator” in the retail industry making $1,040 a year.

This is the last record that has been found on either Jean or Albert.

Jean and Albert had one child:

  • Margaret D Arnold (1923-?) +(1) Robert Page + (2) Leo Harold
