Biography

Jane Cooke was the daughter of Francis Cooke and Hester Mahieu Cooke. The date of her birth is unsure, but took place during the period from 1604 to 1609. Her parents were living at Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands.[1][2]

Jane, her mother Hester, and two siblings immigrated on the Anne, which arrived during the summer of 1623. Jane's father Francis Cooke had arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 with her brother John. Jane's future husband Experience Mitchell also sailed on the Anne. Their marriage occurred after the May 22, 1627 Division of Cattle. Experience Mitchell had eight childern. It seems probable that the first three Mitchell children were Jane's: Elizabeth, Thomas, and Mary. A date of 1641 or earlier has been estimated for the death of Jane.[3]

Experience had eight children total. Their births have been estimated from various facts. There is a nine year gap in the estimates between daughters Mary (b. c. 1632) and Sarah (b. c. 1641), indicating this is the time frame when this wife, Jane, died and he remarried Mary named in his will.

Children:[4]

  1. Elizabeth, b Plymouth abt 1628; m Plymouth 6 Dec 1645 John Washburn, son of John Washburn
  2. Thomas, b Plymouth abt 1630. Believed by some to be the same man who appeared on Block Island by 1678.
  3. Mary, b Plymouth abt 1632; m1 Plymouth 24 Dec 1652 James Shaw, son of John; m2 John Jenny

This person is an ancestor of President H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush [5]

Isaac, this profile has been subject to multiple merges because many people have created duplicate profiles. It does need a cleanup. Do you have a sourced death date? What does the Mayflower Society currently accept as her death date?
posted by Anne B
The death dates are all over the place for this profile. This is not OK.

She is apparently the direct ancestor of multiple Presidents, and has the Mayflower admin team plus EIGHT individual profile managers... and it's still a huge mess, apparently after 9 years online and at least 5 years of comments and editing.

How is it possible for a profile to provide literally 20 sources, but contradict itself five (5!) times over on something as basic as a date of death?

Which is it? :-)

1. "About 1670 in Bridgewater"

2. "She passed away in 1666"

3. "1641 or earlier has been estimated"

4. "before 1640 in Plymouth, Plymouth"

5. "d. Plymouth by 1650 probably well before that"

If we are this uncertain, how did we possibly pick the "About 1670" date to formalize and publish as factual, to the world? Or a place? This seems bogus.

Imagine if all Wikitree profiles were like this?

Cooke-4955 and Cooke-13 do not represent the same person because: Records on the cooke site and other family sites say that Experience was married to both Jane and Mary.Need to research farther.
Cooke-4955 and Cooke-13 appear to represent the same person because: Cooke-4955 seems to have conflated the two wives of Experience. He married Mary Unknown and Jane Cooke. She should be Jane according to the bio.

You've conflated the two wives of Experience, : Jane Cooke and Mary Unknown. Since no children are attached, I will propose a merge with Jane Cooke
