Biography

John Cook was born circa 1660 to Mordecai Cooke and his wife Elizabeth (Ironmonger) Cooke[1] (or born c1690, in Gloucester, Virginia[2]).

It is thought he married Elizabeth Booth[2] daughter of Thomas Booth.[1]

He died in 1776[3] in Virginia.[2]

Research Notes

He passed away on June 20th, 1727.[[1]]

Stubbs states that this John Cooke - born circa 1690 and thought to have married Elizabeth Booth - died in 1776. Stubbs does not mention a 1727 date in the entry for him.[3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Cooke-3203 and Cooke-2931 appear to represent the same person because: dates/locations pretty close & their biographies indicate the profiles are both intended to represent the son of Mordecai II & Frances Ironmonger who married a Booth. Please merge. Thanks!

Cooke-1895 and Cooke-2931 do not represent the same person because: checking the information in the datafields for Cooke-2931 to the cited source clarified death information, which clarifies that these profiles are for different John Cookes.

Stubbs' book (all three clickable links showing as references), published in 1923, is not the most reliable of sources - AND he does not make reference to a John Cocke of Rappahannock or Essex County, Virginia (3 hits on Rappahannock, none relevant; 11 Essex hits - none aside from Buckner of Essex were relevant).

On Cooke-585 is

different families?
  • Isle of Wight county: John Cooke b 1656 (several WikiTree profiles)
  • Old Rappahannock County/Essex County/Middlesex County

Mordecai married Frances Ironmonger (their daughter Mary, m Booth, is documented by Douglas Richardson - see comment on Ironmonger-1).

Cook-4737 and Cooke-2931 are not ready to be merged because: pretty sure these are different branches... see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ironmonger-44 for information about the Cook/Ironmonger connection

Cook-4737 and Cooke-2931 appear to represent the same person because: When I looked I saw there was a John that was Mordecai's the first's son. When I looked I saw there was a John Cook and real;ized they were the same person except for the spelling of the last name. I feel Cooke should be used instead of Cook the other siblings all have Cook with an e. at the end. I am willing to work with you on the wife and if she is correct.

Note dates and database error warning:

Warning: Check the data. A birth date (Cooke-2931 born 1660) should not be more than 60 years before or after a sibling's birth date (Cooke-3641 born 1725) .

However, changing to the sourced date results in this warning: Warning: Check the data. A child's birth date (Cooke-2930 born 1683) should not be before a parent is six years old (Cooke-2931 born 1690) .

The change would also make him 24 years younger than his wife.

Research needed.

update - this John (1690-1776) is the only John attached as son of Mordecai & Frances (Ironmonger) Cooke as of 31 March 2022

This John may be the son of Mordecai & Frances (Ironmonger) Cooke. Their currently attached son John is born too early to be theirs (the b 1660 John should probably be merged with Mordecai's brother John... and this John may be the son of the brother instead of the son of Mordecai).

See Ironmonger-1, Cooke-584 (Frances & Mordecai - both born 1649, according to their profiles) & the two John Cookes: Cooke-2931 (b 1660, attached as Mordecai's son), Cook-4737 (b 1654, attached as his brother)

I have a note on Cooke-2931: b 1690, according to Descendants of Mordecai Cooke, William Carter Stubbs (1923). (see p 39 - http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015025921365;view=1up;seq=43 )
