Biography

Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
Joane (Cooke) Swaybe was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Joanne was baptised on 21 February 1599/1600 at Holy Trinity, Drayton Parslow, Buckinghamshire. She was the daughter of John Cooke 'the younger'.[1][2]

At the time, most of the villagers would have worked on farms or small holdings within the parish or ran businesses which supported those agricultural workers.[3]

She married Francis Swabie/Swaybee on 2 September 1621 at St Mary the Virgin, Wendover, Buckinghamshire.[4][5]

She died in 1627 and was buried at Wendover on 28 May 1627.[6]

Likley Siblings

Other children baptised at Drayton Parslow with father named John (or Johannis) Cooke (Joanne was the only one where John 'the younger' was specified):

  1. Thomas Cooke - 1 Sep 1599[7]
  2. Franncis Cooke - 20 Mar 1602/3 (no father named)[8]
  3. Johannes Cooke - 13 Mar 1607/8[9]
  4. Samuel Cooke - 21 Jul 1610[10]

No mother's names were recorded.

Spouse and Children

Elizabeth (Sweaby) Piner (bef.1657-abt.1744) was originally attached as a daughter but Joanne was unlikely to have given birth at the age of 57. The burial record of 'Mrs Swaybe' ('wife of Francis Swaybe'), likely to be that of Joanne Cooke, indicates she died in 1627 and so has been detached as a parent of Elizabeth.

Two other children of a Francis Sweby/Swaby were baptised at Wendover in 1659 and 1661 (around Elizabeth's time of birth). Francis may have remarried or this may be a different Francis Swaby (perhaps a son?).

There were also children of a Francis Swebye baptised at nearby Weston Turville in the 1630s and of various surname variations in the surrounding areas between 1620 and 1670. It is unclear how many Francis Sweabys there were at the time. There was a Francis Saybe (son of Thomas) baptised at Edlesborough in 1624[11] who could also be the father of Elizabeth (Sweaby) Piner (bef.1657-abt.1744)

No likely baptismal records have been found for children of Francis and Joanne in Buckinghamshire between 1620 and 1630. (Searched FamilySearch, FreeReg, Ancestry, FindMyPast, including surname variants and wildcards) - Palmer-9783 08:45, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
