The Country
Riverton. October 3 - Another of our old residents has passed away in the person of William Cooper, who has been a resident for 40 years. He died on Monday at the age of 78 years, and had been in indifferent health for a long time. Born near Downham, Norfolk, England in 1828, he sailed with his parents and six brothers (he being the eldest) for Australia in October 1848, landing here in February 1849. They settled at Modbury, where he worked at farming for several years. When the railway line to the Burra was being built he worked on that, and then entered the railway, working there for many years, and retired at the 65 year age limit. He was caretaker of the Riverton Institute, and a very old member of the Riverton Oddfellows' Lodge. His wife predeceased him by three years. One son and three daughters survive. [6]
