Biography

James Cooper was born in about 1844 at Chadlington in Oxfordshire. He was the son of John Cooper and his wife Eliza, born Eliza Mills. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1851 James Cooper was living at Chadlington with his parents, John and Eliza, and their other children. His age was given as 6, implying a birth date in 1844 or 1845. His birthplace was given as Chadlington, Oxfordshire. He was described as a scholar at home. ^[1]

In 1861 James was living in Brook End in Chadlington with his parents and their other children. His age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1844 or 1845. His birthplace was given as Chadlington, Oxfordshire. He was an agricultural labourer. ^[2]

Research Notes

There does not seem to be a birth registration for James Cooper, but the age reported in the censuses means he must have been born in about 1844, and he couldn't have been born as late as 1848, because other children were born then.

There was a child whose birth was registered under the name "Charles Cooper", who could well have been a child of John and Eliza, and who would have been born at about the same time as James appears to have been. (Birth registered in Jan-Mar quarter of 1844.) ^[3] Charles does not seem to have died as a young child.
