Biography

Elizabeth was born (or baptised) on 13 Apr 1673 in Low Ellington, Yorkshire, daughter of William Cooper II (1649 - 1709) and Thomasine Porter (1658 - 1698). A pre-merge version of the profile reported that she was born in Snapt, but provided no sources, and this place name can not be located on maps.

An earlier pre-merge version of the profile recorded that she "had one of two children illegitimately before her marriage to Henry Huddleston. No marriage records before Henry were found."

She had an illegitimate child born Jan 2, 1698, before coming to America. (Israel's birth record mentions only his mother, Elizabeth.) Her father listed Israel in his will, but not with Elizabeth’s three Huddleston children. Most likely William took Israel as his own since he was given an equal share with his other children.

  1. Israel Cooper, b Mar 2, 1798; adopted by his grandfather, William Cooper

She came to America with her father and family in 1699 when she was 26 years old. She was still unmarried at the time.

1701 - When Elizabeth was 28, it seems that William arranged a good marriage for her to his prosperous friend Henry Huddleston (1660-1706), who was 41. Henry was not a Quaker, which caused William trouble with his church, but he probably felt that it was good for his daughter and her illegitimate child. One of her sisters may have married a brother of Henry Huddleston, possibly William.

Elizabeth and William were the parents of :

  1. William Huddleston, b 1702; m Dorothy Walsh; d 1776, Bucks Co, PA
  2. Elizabeth Jane Huddleston, b 1704
  3. Henry Huddleston, Jr; b 1706; m Mary Wilkinson; d 1780, Plumstead twp, Bucks Co, Pa.

Elizabeth had only been married 4 years when her husband Henry died in 1705 leaving her with 3 very small children (one unborn), and then her father William died in 1709. William named his children in his will and gave Israel an equal share, possibly because he had raised Israel. He also named Elizabeth’s three Huddleston children. Israel was 11 when William died. Perhaps he lived with Elizabeth afterwards. He died in 1712 at the age of 14.

Elizabeth married Thomas Davis sometime after 1705.

A 1743 deed shows that Elizabeth Cooper Huddleston married Thomas Davis. It also shows that she was alive in 1729.[1]

Research Notes

Earlier pre-merge versions of the profile recorded that :

  • Elizabeth died in Bucks, PA in 1706. No sources were provided, and this is assumed to have been in error.
  • Elizabeth was the wife of Henry Huddleston (Sr, esq), and mother of Henry b.1657,[2] and died and was buried in Sawston, Cambridgeshire, on 21 Nov 1659.[3] This appears to have conflated her with at least one different Elizabeth.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Havers-107 and Havers-17 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for the woman who married Henry Huddleston (c.1600-1665) and was the mother of Henry Huddleston (1657-1713). Burke's Landed Gentry identifies her as Mary Havers, but parish records identify her as Elizabeth. Burke's account is known to be in error.

She wouldn't have married, had a child and died age 15. A Mary Huddleston died in Cumbria. I believe you need to disconnect Henry as a spouse.

A marriage age 11 is not likely. I note there are various trees on Ancestry with this information and suspect none have reliable sources

Would not have had a second name in this time period, she is either Mary or Elizabeth.

Profile Managers need to verify date of death.
Cooper-10703 and Cooper-87 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date and place match. Death place matches. Death year needs to be resolved.
