Biography

Mary Cooper the daughter of Timothy Cooper and Elizabeth (Unknown) Cooper, was born about 1641.[1] [2] .

Mary Cooper/Caper married Joseph Gilson in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, November 10, 1661. [3] [2] [4]

Joseph and Mary originally settled in Chelmsford, but had removed to Groton by March 5, 1665/6, where Joseph was one of the original proprietors. They left Groton and moved to Concord about 1675 when Groton experienced Indian troubles. [5]

Joseph and Mary Gilson/Gillson had, in Chelmsford[6], and Groton[7]:

  • Mary/Mare, b. Nov. 17, 1662 (Chelmsford)
  • Timothy, b. 1664??[8]
  • _____, (perhaps Joseph) ,b. March 8, 1666-7 (Groton)
  • Sarah, b. June 25, 1669 (Groton)
  • Anna, b. Feb. 22, 1670-1 Groton)
  • John, b. April 23, 1674 (Groton)

The date and location of Mary Cooper Gilson's death are unknown, although it is quite likely that it was Concord, as she and the children remained there after her husband's death. .

Research notes

NOTE - In a previous version of this profile, two different women, contemporaries, both named Mary Cooper, got conflated together in this profile. A comment by Douglas Wilber II pointed this out on 28 May 2015 at 23:34 GMT . Thank you to Halsey Bullen for doing an initial separation of the facts. A new profile for Mary Cooper wife of John Merriam has been created and two women have now been separated.. Cole-12288 16:09, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

On close examination of (Caper, CT R), to me, it appears to be a misreading of "Cuper."

Caper-4 and Cooper-2808 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date and husband Joseph Gilson. Cooper is likely LNAB since that profile has source info.

It seems two Mary Coopers have been incorrectly merged.

The Gilson children were born in 1662, 1664, 1667, 1669, 1670, and 1674. The Meriam children in 1666, 1669, 1672, 1677, 1681. Not possible by one woman, even a powerful one.
