Note

Note: Birth Ref. Cooper Family Bible
In Notes compiled by Van Hornbeck by Ada Cooper and Charles G. Royce: As a girl she went to school to my father (Melvin Hornbeck) when he taught at DeBruce where she later taught after graduation from the Brockport State Normal. Father said she was a nice little girl. (I should have said young lady as she must have been 16 or older.) After Mr. Royces death she successfully conducted the Inn until it burned. She with the boys spent the nest cold winter in the Casino (Old Creamery Building) then built the nice house ("Large enough for the children when they come home") which she owned when she died. Much hard work and very much worry. A hard life. A good daughter, wife and mother and a good christian woman. Like so many good minds, hers failed her gradually and pathetically for some years before her death.
In her obituary dated Jan 7, 1938: WIDOW OF FORMER SHERIFF ROYCE DIED HERE NEW YEARS DAY
Mrs. Elizabeth Royce, 81, died New Years day at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Van Hornbeck on North Street, Monticello. She was the widow of William F. Royce, one time Sheriff of Sullivan County . Mrs. Royce had lived here with her daughter for several years having been incapacitated for some time. For years the Royces ran a boarding house at DeBruce known as "The Hearthstone Inn," which had a large patronage.
Mrs. Royce was born at Napanoch, Dec. 29, 1856, the daughter of Matthias Cooper and Elizabeth Sharpe Cooper. She is survived by one daughter, Marion R. Hornbeck, wife of Van Hornbeck, of Monticello; two sons, James S. Royce, of Warrensburg, NY, and William D. Royce of Seneca Falls, NY Also by seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Royce's funeral was held Monday at 2 O'Clock from the Hornbeck residence, with Dr. Crawford officiating. Burial was in Rock Ridge Cemetary.
Another obituary dated Jan 7, 1938 reads:
MRS. ROYCE DIES-- WIFE OF FORMER SHERIFF, Mrs. Elizabeth Royce, the mother of Mrs. Van Hornbeck, died at the home of her daughter on North Street on January 1st, of general debility, following an illness of nearly ten years. Mrs. Royce was born at Napanoch on December 29, 1856, eighty one years ago last December, the daughter of Matthias Cooper and Elizabeth Sharp Cooper. For eight years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Hornbeck, but was well known here by many of the older folks as Mrs. William F. Royce, who lived here when her husband, William F. Royce, was sheriff of the county. That period dates back to 1903.
In 1885, she married Mr. Royce at DeBruce and had made that place her home for many years. The surviving relatives are Marion R. Hornbeck, James S. Royce and William Donald Royce.
The funeral was held at her late home at 49 North Street, Monticello, at 2:30 pm, January 3rd, 1938 and interment was in Rock Ridge Cemetery.
She will be remembered here by the women who knew her in the yesterdays of life as a woman of fine personality and noble character.
