Biography

Birth and Early Life

Anna Isabella Cooper was born on 6 November 1847 in Missouri, United States to John Wesley Cooper and Hannah Daniels Walden who were married on 27 November 1845 in Atchison, Missouri, USA. Her father died when she was about one year old. Her mother then married Andrew Jackson Keeney (1819-1898) on 3 June 1849 in Holt County, Missouri. Anna was almost 2 years old. Her mother had children with Jackson and died on 15 March 1860 in Lane County, Oregon. Shortly after the last child was born. Jackson raised her with the other children as his own.

Half Siblings

  1. Elias P. Keeney was born on 27 June 1852 in Holt County, Missouri, United States. He died on 31 July 1857 in Oregon, United States.
  2. James Madison Keeney was born on 15 December 1853 in Holt County, Missouri, United States. He died on 8 February 1912 in Eugene, Lane, Oregon, United States.
  3. George R. Keeney was born on 22 January 1856 in Ray County, Missouri, United States. He died on 18 June 1859 in Lane County, Oregon, United States.
  4. William Daniels Keeney was born on 27 February 1857 in Ray County, Missouri, United States. He died on 11 April 1930 in Dexter, Lane, Oregon, United States. His birth date is problematic because he couldn't have been born a month after his brother George (which is what it would be if the obit and headstone were correct; so it has been stated as 1857 here.)
  5. John Blanden Keeney was born on 20 October 1859 in Goshen, Lane, Oregon, United States. He died on 1 September 1942 in Condon, Gilliam, Oregon, United States.

Right after Jackson married her mother in 1849, he went to California by way of Nicaragua on a small river steamer going from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Isthmus of Nicaragua up the coast to San Francisco, California. It is thought that his new wife and stepdaughter went with him. He probably was going to the gold fields although a record of the specifics has not been found. He returned by way of oxen team and wagon in 1850 and farmed for a few years more in Holt County, Missouri. They did not accompany the family members who went to Oregon on the Keeney Wagon Train in 1851. They stayed behind until 1857 when he and his family joined the rest of the family. They arrived in October 1857 when Anna was 10 years old. Her stepfather purchased 640 acres which was the Milton Riggs Donation Land Claim located about 7 miles south of Eugene, Oregon near Goshen. In June1858 her three year old half brother George died and in October 1858 John was born. Her mother died before 1861 when she was about 14. Her stepfather married for the third time to Amanda Jane Morse on 22 December 1861. She was a widow and came to the marriage with a daughter, Rebecca Ann Mathews (1852-1880) who was about 9 years old, giving Anna a stepsister of sorts.

PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the placement of the reference and footnote notations. 1/2 of the census data and other is lost if you do. No rule that I know of that says you have to have no space between "Sources" and References or can't have footnotes. And yes, I have read the "Help" page. Thank you.
