BARONS, Feb. 12. "A gloom was cast over the villiage on Monday morning when it was learned that William C. L. Cooper, aged 61, had passed away at 6:30 am. Mr. Cooper had suffered a severe heart attack last Sunday, and while his condition remained serious all week, he was appeared to be improving until late Saturday, when his condition then became critical and continued so until he passed away at dawn. Mr. Cooper was born in Springhill, N.S. and came West in 1903. He was one of the earliest settlers in the village of Barons, opening a store in a tent half a mile south of the present site, before the railway came through and supplies had to be freighted in from Calgary. When the villiage was founded. Mr. Cooper and his partner, Hugh Murray, built the first store and for 20 years carried on a general merchandise business. Mr. Murray sold his partnership to David Kennedy, and he and Mr. Cooper have carried on the business since. Mr. Cooper also had the first post office in Barons. In 1911 he was married to Miss Mary Wood, also from Nova Scotia, and from this union three children were born, Edgar of Edmonton, Mrs. Gwendolyn Baldwin, and Miss Lois Cooper of Vancouver, all of whom were at the bedside at the end. The only other relative is Miss Mary Copper, a sister, of Portage la Prairie, MB. His brothers predeceased him. Though Mr. Cooper had never sought public life, he served, during the early years of the village, on the school board and council. He was also one of those instrumental in the building of the Baron's church. In spite of a retiring disposition, whose chief interest was his home and family, Mr. Cooper had a host of warm friends. His business integrity and the fine dignity of all his dealings won him a universal regard and respect in the community. He was always ready to lend support to all activities for the good of the town and community and was known for many kind deeds."
