Extract from Steiglitz Historical Society Newsletter volume 4 Issue 6 November 2003.
Edwin was born 3rd August 1870.
Edwin was employed by the Victorian Railways Department from 1st Novr 1889 until 20th Nov 1890 and from 1st Feb 1892 to 17th Jan 1893 as Chainman, in a survey party on trail and permanent surveys. Active in his field and his conduct was excellent, his services were dispensed with owing to completion of the work.
Edwin's team surveyed the Gippsland and South Gippsland railway lines. It appears that Edwin learnt surveying from his Uncle William Robert Cooper, who was another of our pioneers of Steiglitz, and owned quite a considerable amount of property within Steiglitz township.
A report on the "Kinglock Mine" in 1934 shows us that Edwin signed himself as "Consulting mining expert and Subterraneous Surveyor"
Retirement saw Edwin turn to his hobbies of Aboriginal artifacts and tools, Naturalist and Botanist, he collected wildflowers, plants and herbal speies to concoct his own medicines and brews.
Edwin supplied the Geelong Advertiser with local news, he was also a great musician, having learnt the violin, he played at many of the local dances.
Edwin Cooper who died 6th August 1951 at Ballarat is buried at Meredith cemetery. Refer Meredith Cemetery Headstone transcriptions.
