Biography

European Aristocracy
John Corbet was a member of the aristocracy in England.

John Corbet was born on 25 March, 1298 [aged 24 at the feast of the Annunciation, 1322[1]].

John was the son of Peter Corbet.[1]

John was the brother of:

  1. Peter Corbet, who was married to Beatrice;[1] John was Peter's heir;[1]

On 4 June, 15 Edward II, a writ issued regarding Peter Corbet resulted in inquisitions in 1322 in Salop on Tuesday after St John the Baptist, and in Devon on 6 July, which found his brother, John son of Peter Corbet, aged 24 at the feast of the Annunciation last, was his next heir, and Peter had held:[1]

  • in Salop, the manors of Caus, Jokelhull, Worthin, Schelve, Binneweston, Forton, Hemme, Overegorther, Netheregorther and Bagheltref, were held jointly by Peter and Beatrice his wife by the enfeoffment of Hugh Bergam, chaplain, by fine levied in the king’s court, to them and the heirs of their bodies with remainder to Peter's right heirs, of the king in chief by barony, viz:—5 knight’s fees;
  • in Devon, a moiety of the manors of Hurberton and Brixham, held jointly by Peter and his wife Beatrice, by the enfeoffment of Elias de Wovre, to them and the heirs of the said Beatrice by fine levied in the king’s court, of the king in chief by service of 1/20 knight’s fee.
  • in Devon, the manor of Silpherton, held jointly by Peter and his wife Beatrice, by the enfeoffment of John de Bromfild to them and the heirs of their bodies with remainder to the right heirs of the said Beatrice, of Hugh de Cortenay by service of finding a bedel for making the summonses for the whole of the said Hugh’s hundred of Hairigg; heir unknown.

On 10 June, 15 Edward II [1322], a Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Peter Corbet's wife, Beatrice, that the escheator had taken into the king’s hand the manors, &c. (except that of Silpherton), of which she was enfeoffed jointly with the her husband Peter; the information returned was from the inquisitions above.[1]

Death

Corbet Inheritance

"With respect to Beatrix, wife of Peter Corbet II, she was sister of John, Baron Beauchamp of Hache. After Peter Corbet's decease, she remarried with Sir John de Leybourne, who accordingly pressented to Caus chapel in 1346. Beatrix died in 1347, seized in tail of the whole Shropshire manor of the Corbets, which then passed to the great-grandchildren of her first husband's aunts, Alice andEmma, daughters of Thomas Corbet. Alice, the eldest, had married Robert, Baron Stafford; accordingly, one moiety of the barony of Caus was annexed to the barony of Stafford. The other moeity was subdivided, and the share of Emma, youngest daughter of Thomas Corbet, and wife of Brian de Brompton, is now in the heirs of Harley, and in the heirs of Cornwall of Kinlet." [2]

"The Corbets of Leigh and Sundorne, according to Blakeway (Sheriffs of Shropshire, pp 42, 65) are descended from John, the last male Corbet of the elder line. The said John , however, died without lawful issue. Eyton says that the Roger Corbet of Legh justa Caus, knight, who by writ of May 9th, 1324, was summoned to attend the great council of Westminster, "was asuredly ancestor of the Corbets of Leigh." [2]

"Of Corbets which have branched off from the house of Caus," says the same authority," none of them can be descended from any later baron than he who died in 1222." [3]

Research Notes

John Corbet Anderson in Shropshire: It's Early History and Antiquities says "The heir of Peter Corbet II was his brother, John Corbet, who spent his life in ineffectually prosecuting a claim on the Valletort estates, of which he was the co-heir in right of his grandmother, Isabel, sister of Reginald de Valletort, of Trematon, Cornwall."[2]
