Biography

Birth and Parents

Anne was born Moreton Corbet 1500. Anna, Named in June 1513 Inquisition Post Mortem. [1] Named in Deed, proved November 1513, as Anne. [2] Named Joan, wife of Thomas Newport, by Richardson [3]

Anne/Joan is named in two documents created around the time of her father's death:

  • A reference in the Harrison indexes gives "Inq. P. M. of Sir Robert Corbet, knt, taken at salop, 16 June 5 Hen VIII. Sir Robert Corbet died 11th April 5 Hen VIII, leaving a widow Elizabeth, and children Roger (aged 11), Anna, Dorothy, Joanna and Maria." [1]
  • "A Deed which is almost in the form of a will is also recorded in Dods Mss. It bears no date but was "proved in November 1513." Whereas I, Sir Robert Corbet, have made by Deed unto Sir Henry Vernon, knight, Thomas Inglefield, knight, Thomas Cornwale, knight, Thomas Laken, Esqr, Roger Corbet my son and heir apparent, Esqr, Richard Vernon, Esqr, etc, all my lordships and lands in Hopton, Fitz, Eton, Constantine, Lawley, Water Upton, Dalyngton, Lynchdale, Sothcote, Howbrighill, and Wyggynton, in the counties of Salop, Northampton, Bucks, Essex and Hertford, to hold for the use of me, the said Sir Robert Corbet and my heires. Item. I bequeath my bodye to be buried in the Church of St. Batilmew att Moreton, Corbet, Elizabeth, the Testaor's wife, Roger Testator's son and heire, Anne Dorotte, and Jane the Testaror's daughters, each C marks. Proved 13 Nov 1513. [2]

Anne was the daughter of Sir Robert Corbet of Moreton Corbet. [4]

Her parents were Sir Robert Corbet, who married Elizabeth Vernon, daughter of Henry (or Harry) Vernon, Knt, of Haddon, Derbyshire, by Anne, daughter of John Talbot, K. G., 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury. [3] No date is provided for his marriage, but it may be estimated as 1498, when Robert was 20, based on the birth of a child the following year. In any event, the marriage was prior to 1504, because "in the period 1504-15, Richarde Charleton sued Henry Vernon, Knt, in chancery regarding a bond given on behalf of Richard Corbett, Knt, concerning the marriage of Robert, his son, with Elizabeth, defendant's daughter." [3]

Birth Year Estimation

She is currently shown as born in 1503, which would have her first son, born 1511, born when she was 8. A more reasonable birth for her would be ten years earlier, 1493.Day-1904 04:04, 15 November 2017 (EST), however if her father was born in 1478, his earliest marriage would have been at, say, age 18, 1496. If Anne was his oldest child, she could have been born 1497, and if her first child was born 1511, that would make her aged 14 when this occurred.

Marriage to Thomas Newport

Her first son Richard Newport being born in 1511, assume that her marriage to Richard's father Thomas Newport took place no later than 1510.

Douglas Richardson does not show an Anne as daughter of Sir Robert Corbet who was born about 1478 (aged 16 in 1494); but he does show a daughter Joan who married Thomas Newport. [3]

Marriage to Richard Moreton

There is no marriage record for Anne/Joan to Richard Moreton. Rychard, son of Rychard Moreton of Haughton, in the parish of Shifnal, appears with the date 24 December 1575, but it is not clear whether this was the date of a marriage or burial.[5]

This profile represents the wife of Thomas Newport and daughter of Robert Corbet and Elizabeth Vernon. Her name is either Anne or Joan. I'm confused ... where is the evidence that she married 2nd to Moreton?
