Born: about 1781, calculated from age 78 at marriage in 1849.
Born: about 1785, calculated from age 78 at death in 1863. Note his birth is not listed in the Woodstock Vital Records or the Barbour Collection.
Census data supports a 1780/1781 birth date.
Marriage One : Betsey Barber. Betsey is listed as the mother of several of their children on their death records.
Divorce: Granted 4 January 1849. His petition was dated 25 Dec 1848 at the Superior Court in Brooklyn, Windham County. The divorce petition states that Samuel married 10 March 1800 Betsey Barber, then of Woodstock. Note the date March 1800 was written over what looks like November 1798. About the 1st of October 1842, Betsey in the town of Union deserted Samuel and left the state with Peter Tanner (possibly Farmer).[1]
There is something wrong with the dating. If Betsey is the Betsey born in 1790 or 1794 in Woodstock, she would have been too young to marry in 1800. This is the only Betsey Barber recorded in Connecticut in the correct time frame. However, births did not always get recorded. For example Samuel's cannot be found. There is no known confirming evidence that the couple married as early as 1800. Daughter, Candace, didn't marry until 1827, placing her birth about 1807 +/-.
Marriage Two:
