N1913Martin S. Corbitt, a prominent Citizen of clinch county in his day, was
born in Ware, now Clinch County, May 12, 1840, son of Newsom and Polly
Smith Corbitt (Vol. II). He grew up and lived in the same community of
Clinch County all his life except the last eleven years. He was married
twice. His first wife was his cousin, Lenora "Wealthy" Pafford, born August 26,
1847, daughter of Rowan Pafford (Vol. I). She died May 4, 1896. They
were married Nov. 26, 1867. Eleven Children were born by her.
Mr. Corbitt enlisted in the Confederate Army May 5, 1862, and was
sergeant in Co. "G", 50th Georgia Vol. Infantry Regiment, serving until
the close of the war. According to his son Duvon Corbitt, " I have his
furlough at the time he left the service, too sick for further duty. He
did not return. This furlough is dated from Russelville, Tennessee,
January 12, 1864. It states that he enlisted at Savannah, May 5, 1862.
A note by Col. P.M. McGlashem says he left camp January 28, 1864 by
orders of this colonel. He went Home via Petersburg, Va. Wilmington,
N.C., Charleston, S.C. and Savannah, and on the R.R. to Homerville (then
only Station No. 11). He was accompanied by another sick Clinch County
Soldier named Tom Tomlin. At the time father was a Sergeant in Company
G, 50th Georgia Volunteers.
In the Reconstruction days that followed the war, he was elected
Tax-Collector of Clinch County, on the Radical ticket, serving
1868-1871. In the election of January, 1885, he was elected Ordinary of
Clinch County by one vote over his nearest opponent, George Cornelius.
In the same year, 1889, the county affairs were taken out of the hands of
the Ordinary and vested in a Board of County commissioners, by
legislative act Mr. Corbitt was named as one of the board for a term of
two years. Two years later, he was re-elected for another two-year term,
serving 1889 to 1893. He became an active member of the Clinch County
Farmers Alliance when it organized about 1887, and later when out of it
the Populist Party was formed he became one its leaders, and was its
unsuccessful candidate for Representative in 1896 and 1898. for Ordinary
in 1900.
"Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" Folks Huxford, Volume 3,
Enlisted as a Private on May 5, 1862. 3rd Sargeant in Company G. 50th
Georgia Regiment. Was organized at Homerville, Georgia on March 4, 1862
under Colonel W. R. Manning. It was attached to Brig. General H. W.
Mercer's brigade which was part of Major General John C. Pemberton's CSA
troops. Captain John R. O'Steen commanding (died September 23, 1862 of
battle wounds received September 4, 1862). Infantry Confederate States
Army. Furloughed on January 28, 1864 at home (Chronic Diarrhea).

Mr. Corbitt's second marriage took place at Homervile, August 1, 1899,
when he married Miss Minnie Faircloth, Homerville milliner. She was a
native of Sampson County, N.C. and a daughter of James and Elizabeth
Abriett Faircloth and grand-daughter of Raiford and Martha Jones
Faircloth, old families of that county. She was born in May, 1865, and
is yet living (1955). She served two terms as Ordinary of
Atkinson County, being first elected in 1928. By this marriage, three
sons were born.
Mr. Corbitt's home-place was on lot 212, 7th district of Clinch County.
He sold this with other adjoining lands he owned and moved to Pearson,
April 1, 1902, where he lived retired until his death July 1, 1913.
He was a faithful and active member of the Masonic Lodge and the
Methodist Church for many years prior to his death. He first became a
Mason in 1867 in Cassia Lodge No. 224, at Homerville, and on Dec. 8,
1877, transferred his membership in Satilla Lodge No. 163 at Pearson. He
was Worshipful Master in Satilla Lodge for two or three terms and al
