N2870"Newsom Corbitt, a son of Isham and Amelia Corbitt (q.v.) was born in
Tennessee, March 10, 1806, and died at his home in the northern part of
Clinch county, Dec. 10, 1886. He was married in 1831 to Miss Mary
(Pollie) Smith, a daughter of Rev. William Smith, R.S.,. She was born in
Liberty County, Dec. 14, 1809 and died at her home in Clinch county,
Sept. 6, 1878.
Newsom Corbitt came with his parents to Georgia in boyhood, and resided
in Bulloch County in the 1827 Land Lottery at which time he drew land.
He came to Ware, now Clinch County, in 1830, and married. He owned Lots
of Land 168, 169, 203, 7th district; his home-place was on the first two
lots; these lands were cut out of Clinch into Atkinson County in the
latter's formation in 1918.
He was elected Justice of Peace in the 586th district of Clinch county
and served 1853-57 and again 1861-69. He was elected State Senator from
the 5th District, as a Republican, in the State election in 1868, and
served in sessions of 1868 -71.
Mr. Corbitt and his wife were buried at Mud Creek Primitive Baptist
Chruch, in former Clinch but now Lanier County. Pioneers of Wiregrass
