Biography

Adkin Corley was born about 1774, in 96 District, South Carolina, possibly in the area that became Edgefield District in 1785.[1] Adkin is believed to be the son of Richard Joseph Corley and Letitia Travis, no documents have been located to confirm these are Adkin's parents.

Adkin married Charlotte (surname unknown) sometime before 1800. No marriage record has been located.

Adkin appears in the 1800 Federal census in Edgefield District, South Carolina.[2] Adkin's household appeared as follows:

1 male under age 10
1 male age 26 to 44
1 female under age 10
1 female age 16 to 25

Adkin appears in the 1810 Federal census in Abbeville District, South Carolina.[3] Adkin's household appeared as follows:

3 males under age 10
1 male age 10 to 15
1 male age 26 to 44
2 females under age 10
1 female age 10 to 15
1 female age 26 to 44

Adkin died intestate in Abbeville District, South Carolina sometime before the 14th of December, 1819. Adkin's widow, Charlotte was granted administration of his estate and filed her bond for administration of the estate with the court in Abbeville District, South Carolina on the 14th of December, 1819.[4]

Adkin's son Woody and daughter Nancy filed sworn statements with the court regarding assets they had received from their father prior to his death.[5] The statements read as follows: "State of South Carolina Abbeville District } Personally came Miss Nancy Corley and being duly sworn saith that some time before the death of her father Mr. Adkin Corley he did for some consideration give her a colt a bay mare about eight or nine months old Sworn and subscribed to this 10th day of January 1820 before me Edward Corley [signed] Nancy Corley"

"State of South Carolina Abbeville District } Personally came Wooddy Corley and being duly sworn saith that on the first day of July his Father Mr. Adken Corley did for some consideration give him a black horse colt with a star on his face which he had now in possession Sworn and subscribed to this 10th day of January 1820 before me Edward Collier [signed] W Corley"

Further research is needed to determine the children of Adkin and Charlotte Corley as the estate records of Adkin Corley do not list a final distribution showing the name of Adkin's heirs.

Corley-1138 and Corley-226 appear to represent the same person because: Both men are named Adkin Corley, Both men were born the same year and both born in in South Carolina. Both men died the same year in the same county. Both men appear in the same 1800 census with Corley-226 further sources for census and estate records located in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Both men were married to Charlotte. Charlotte is not listed as a wife of Corley-226 to prevent duplicates but Charlotte is named in the estate records of Corley-226 as the administrator of her husband's estate. These men are clearly duplicates and should be merged. The DAR papers for Richard Corley-22 list only one son: Michael Corley.
