Biography

Manley Cornelius was the son of Beverly Cornelius and Nancy Euphemia Smith and grandson of William and Lettice Cornelius. He was married to Martha Hooper, daughter of John Hooper, on September 27, 1849 in St. Clair County, Alabama. They had four children: Thomas Benton Cornelius, Indiana Cornelius (died young), Nancy Hester Cornelius Sims, and Rachel C. Cornelius Pearson (died after birth of first child).
Manley served as a Private in the CSA 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company E during the Civil War.
It is said he gave the wood for the sub floor in the old Clear Springs Methodist Church sanctuary.

Blount County, Alabama Probate records dated 7 Oct 1871 states Manley Cornelius died 20 Sep 1871 at his residence in Blount County, Alabama. He had $2,500 valued estimated assets. Martha Cornelius, widow. Son, Benton B. Cornelius is only heir mentioned. Beverly Cornelius was also mentioned as heir (this was Manley's father). The executor was his brother in law, James Montgomery.

Note: Many ppl have Manley dying in 1879 but the date of death 20 Sep 1871 is clear in this probate record.

Manley Cornelius is buried in an unmarked grave between his father and only son.
