Biography

Byron, eldest son of Eli and Deborah was born in Whitt, Texas in Parker County, due east of Oran (Black Springs) Texas Community.

Byron's middle name Lafayette was likely chosen by his father Eli. Eli's father was Moses Lafayette Cornelius.

Byron made his living primarily as a union carpenter. Although growing up in a world where and when farming was practically the only choice people had in rural parts of the south.

At about age 15, Byron began the task of making a living for his Mother and siblings when Eli passed away at a very young age. Byron never turned his back or shirked any task. He stepped up and did the job assisting and supporting his Mother in the completion of raising his brothers and sisters.

In 1933 Byron married Hazel Vera Kincaid. Together they have three children. Jimmie Donald, Deborah Sue and Gerald Wayne.

Byron worked on multiple Corps of Engineers hydro electric dam projects including Morris Sheppard (Possum Kingdom), Bull Shoals, Lake Whitney among others.

After the Whitney impoundment (1957) Byron moved his family to Joshua Texas. There, he continued to work as a Union Carpenter building many churches and other large projects around the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

Byron was practically retired by about 1970. He spent his leisure in the outdoors, mainly sitting quietly in the shade, tending his vegetable gardens, fishing and was a dedicated fan of Major League Baseball.

In 1974, after months of pleading, Hazel talked Byron into building a weekend cottage. So, with the assistance of younger brother Rufus Cornelius, son Gerald Wayne Cornelius, son in law Bill Buntin and Grandson Bill Buntin Jr., Byron put on his tool belt and swung his framing hammer again and built what is now referred to as "The Little House" which was constructed on his original home place lot next to the Salt Branch in Oran Community, Palo Pinto County, Texas.

Byron ordered the lumber for the house from Furr Lumber in Mineral Wells, Texas. The lumber arrived one Friday. After the house was constructed, there was but a wheelbarrow of scrap lumber left over. We could say that Byron knew what he was doing? I think so.

Byron enjoyed the cottage with many friends and family members and played host to multiple Texas 42 tournaments around Palo Pinto County for several years.

Byron left this life in November 1986 leaving the world a better place than when he found it. Byron Cornelius treated all people with the utmost respect and courtesy. Byron had a unique way with people. I am his Grandson. I just knew how to act and behave without him saying a word. I never heard him swear, talk down to anyone, or treat anyone unkindly or unfairly.

Byron Lafayette Cornelius was the very definition of "Gentleman".

He was my "Poppa" and is missed and loved still by many. [1]
