Biography

Silas Cornett was born October 6, 1843 in Letcher Co., KY. He died[1] on August 1, 1925, on Linefork, Letcher, Kentucky. He was buried in Old Cornett Cemetery, Gilley, Letcher, KY [2],[3]

Silas married Cynthia (Cynthianna) June Stamper (1839–1911) on 22 Mar 1866 in Letcher Co., KY. Cynthia was buried in Old Cornett Cemetery, Gilley, KY. [4]

Her parents were Sarah Creech (August 22, 1807, VA, - January 7, 1872), and Ison (Isham) Stamper (Sarah and Isham were married on January 12, 1827. Isham's parents were William Stamper and Emily Polly).

They had nine children in 18 years.

  2. John P. Cornett b. August 9, 1867? Might be known as John Sherman Cornett
  3. Elijah G. Cornett b. April 1870, d. unknown. Elijah married Martha Jane Miniard on 17 Mar 1891 in Harlan Co., KY. Martha was born about 1871. [5]. Children were Mary S. b. 1892, Leona b. 1897, Matilda (Tildy), and Ethel. He may have been known as Elijah 'Leatherwood' Cornett.
  4. Martha Malvina (Cornett) Gilbert (1873-aft.1926)7
  5. Mary Jane (Cornett) Blanton (1874-1957)b. either October 1874 or November 2, 1874, d. either January 29, 1957, or November 2, 1957. m. Hebron Blanton - b. 1871, d. unknown. Children were Henry, Hiram, John, Stephen, Alford, Jarrett, Martha, Alberta, and Pearl.
  6. Jasper Cornett (1875-1956) m. Mary E. Lewis (Mary Elizabeth Browning )- (March 27, 1875, - December 24, 1975) – she was the daughter of William and Martha Lewis, brother of James Jarrett Lewis. Children were Ella, Columbus, Artha, Ollie, and Winfield.
  7. Jonathon Cornett (1876 or 1877, d. unknown) m. Lula? Children were Cara b. 1896, Kinly b. 1898, Litton b. 1899, Halley b. 1905, Jess b. 1906, Harrison b. 1908, Nancy b. 1910, John b. 1912, Cassie b. 1915, Callie b.?

  9. Finley Cornett b. December 1883 or 1888, d. unknown. Finley married Rebecca Fritt on 22 Jul 1902 in Harlan Co., KY. m. Maggie Reynolds? on December 26, 1924. Children were Grant, Cordelia, James Archie, Effie, and Evarts. Maggie's nickname may have been Neelie.

Silas was a Civil War veteran. 13 Oct 1862 Kentucky, He first joined the Harlan County Battalion, Company 'A' of the Kentucky State Guards[6], then transferred to the 47th Ky Infantry.

Note: Perry and Letcher Co Kentucky join at approximately 'Linefork, KY,' the boundary line was nebulous to the uninitiated person. Letcher was formed from a part of Perry.
