Is there one person named "John Samuel Cornett" or two conflated people named "John Cornett" and "Samuel Cornett"?
Samuel Cornet marries Mary Bennan in Washington, Virginia in 1791
Samuel Cornett (born between 1766 and 1784) living in Clay, Kentucky in 1810[1]
Samuel Cornett (born before 1775) living in Clay, Kentucky in 1820[2]
John Cornett (born before 1765) living in Washington, Virginia in 1810[3]
John Cornett (born between 1776 and 1794) living in Grayson, Virginia in 1820.[4]
Referring to the question above--is there one man, John Samuel, or two men conflated, the records are very clear. Samuel Cornett appears in records of Buckingham, Russell, and Scott County, Virginia--always called Samuel. He moved to Clay County, Kentucky, and records continue to refer to him as only Samuel.
Some early researchers, eager to attach Revolutionary War service to Samuel, combined him with one Jean (John) Cornet who served and was a prisoner of war in Quebec. This John Cornet was from New England and not part of the Virginia family of Samuel Cornett.
The mistake will never be completely fixed--there are too many online trees with the wrong information--but it is good for future researchers to know about the mix-ups. (Dann Norton)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
I am OK with merging IF the unverified information on "John Samuel" is removed and the recorded information from the court records is updated.
1. No records show he is "John" Samuel--only Samuel. (John was added in an amateur attempt to make Samuel a Rev War soldier by conflating him with Jean Cornett from New England.)
2. His father's name is William proved by the 1822 Chancery court record naming Samuel and his brothers as sons of William--William's widow was Lucy.
If you think I should make those changes, I will merge. Otherwise, I want to keep the corrected lineage separate from this one.
I added a research section to help document the John vs Samuel situation. Most of the internet seem to have John Samuel Cornett so even if "John" was deleted it would just get put back in unless it documented why it shouldn't be there. I was trying to reconcile a few records. It appears there is an younger Samuel in Kentucky in 1810 while there is an older John Cornett still in Virginia in 1810. So, probably two different people from what I see. But it is still sort of confused.

Cornett-190 and Cornett-1015 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be duplicates using slightly different name. Likely same parents same dates same locations. May also be duplicates in parents.
Hi again... Also, I believe his correct spouse is Mary Polly Davidson Cornett (Davidson-2812), based on fact that Mary Davidson Cornett (Davidson-8867) would have been 62 when their child Sarah was born in 1806.
That birth year of Sarah fits in with the range of children he had with Mary Polly, which were born in 1798, 1814, and 1818.
The paragraph in his bio says "Erin Cornett was born in 1676... that have been his great grandfather? I think this is where some of the confusion may be?? Erin would be John Samuel's great grandfather if you look in his line.
I believe the last part of the paragraph is talking about his father John Samuel Cornett, being married to Elizabeth Bacon Mosby, which would be this John Samuel Cornett's mother.
John's linked mother Mary Jesse is listed as being born in 1774, 15 years after John was born in 1759.
This profile says his mothers name is Elizabeth Bacon. I think his mother Elizabeth Bacon (Brennan-1642) is listed as a spouse by accident.
I caught this when i did a merge for this profile of John Samuel Cornett.
Can you check into this and correct his profile? I won't remove Mary as his mother. Thanks
Cornett-190 and Cornett-521 appear to represent the same person because: Clear Duplicate. Same birth/death dates. Same birth/date locations. Same spouse. Please merge. Thank you.
