Biography

Origins

Phillippa Cornish was baptised 4 January 1760 at St Columb Major, Cornwall, England,[1] the third daughter and fourth child of John Cornish and his wife Alice (nee Alice Hawke)

Her mother died in November 1769, when Phillippa was probably just short of her tenth birthday. Her father doesn't appear to have married again and it might have been the eldest daughter of the family, Elizabeth, aged 14, who cared for Phillippa and her younger brother Michael.

Her father made a will on 13 August 1777[2], leaving Phillippa, £130 to be paid when she turned 21, and until she reached that age, she was to receive £4 a year for her support and maintenance, paid quarterly. Phillippa was also to receive all the beds, bedding, household goods and other furniture, except for the bed and bedroom furniture that John used.

Family

Banns were called for the marriage of Philippa Cornish and Samuel Solomon, both of the Parish of St Columb Major, on 4th, 11th and 18th March 1781[3] but sadly Philippa's father, John Cornish, was to die during this period, being buried on 16th March.[4] This probably explains the delay of about four weeks between the last banns and the actual marriage on 13 April 1781 at St Columb Major. Both Samuel and Philippa could sign the register, Philippa, as 'Philappa Cornish' and the witnesses were Jane Kendall, Thomas Solomon (probably the groom's brother), John Cornish (the bride's brother) and Thos. Soloman (the groom's father).[5]

Phillippa and Samuel were to have three sons:

  1. William Solomon, baptised 23 December 1781 at St Columb Major, [6], but he died young and was buried at St Columb Major 10 March 1785[7];
  2. Thomas Solomon, born possibly at Newlyn East, but baptised at St Columb Major in Cornwall on 25 July 1783; [8]
  3. William Solomon, perhaps born at Lanivet, but also baptised at St Columb Major on 17 September 1785. [9]

Samuel died, probably aged not quite 30 years and was buried 10 March 1787 at St Columb Major.[10]

Death and Burial

Philippa was also to die quite young, less than a year after Samuel, and was buried 27 February 1788 at St Columb Major, Cornwall.[11]
