Biography

Daniel Corson was born in Pennsylvania.

Daniel, son of Jacob Corson and Elizabeth Fiester, was born about 1821-22 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

After his father's death in 1842,[1] Daniel remained with his widowed mother. In 1850, Elizabeth Courson (age 56, owner of land valued at $5,000) headed the household in Shrewsbury Township, Lycoming County, that encompassed Daniel (29, farmer), and his siblings Eliza (20), Jacob Fiester (20, laborer), Maria (15), Caroline C. (12) and Edward Corson (12).[2]

On 7 February 1854 in Lycoming County, he married Sarah Mackey Neece,[3] daughter of John Ridge Neece and Mary Rosebery Mackey. They had children:

  1. Joseph Howard Corson (1855–1937).[4][5][6][7]
  2. Thomas Coleman Corson (1857–1908).[4][5][8][9][10]
  3. Anna Mary (Corson) Burrows (1861–1935).[5][8][11]
  4. Henry Judson Corson (1864–1918).[5][8][12]

After their marriage Daniel (age 39, farmer) and Sarah Courson (31) settled on a farm valued at $3,000 in Wolf Township, Lycoming County, where in 1860 they lived with their sons Joseph Howard (5) and Thomas Coleman Courson (2), as well as two servants named Samuel Gilbert (18) and Mary E. Steel (12).[4]

Daniel (age 49, farmer on land valued at $5,000) and Sarah Carson [sic] (39) remained in Wolf Township in 1870 with their growing family J. Howard (15), Thomas C. (13), Anna M. (9) and Henry J. Carson (6), as well as Howard Bowie (17).[5]

By 1880, Daniel (age 58) was county commissioner living in Hughesville, Lycoming County, with his wife Sarah M. (49), their sons Thomas C. (23, farmhand) and Henry J. Corson (16, farmhand), daughter Anna M. Burrows (18) and Anna's husband Charles W. Burrows (23, furniture factory worker).[8]

On 16 January 1883, Daniel was incarcerated for embezzlement in the Eastern State Penitentiary for a term of one year, nine months.[13] His record indicates that he is married with four children and this is his first offense.[13] He is described as a dark-complected, blue-eyes farmer with white hair, who was 5'8" tall and weighed 151 pounds.[13] It also notes that he had a third-grade education.[13]

Daniel died 20 December 1895 and was buried at Muncy Cemetery in Muncy, Lycoming County.[14]
