Biography

-My given name at birth was Lance Quinn Murphy. I was born with a cleft palate/lip.

-My birth certificate lists my mother's first husband, Patrick Murphy, as my father. On my 25th birthday I legally changed my name at the Hennepin County Courthouse to Logan Quinn. Having never liked "Lance", I chose the name of a fictional character I related to and then just chopped off the name of the man who was never a part of my life, making my middle name my last name. I saw no point in adopting a new middle name.

-In 1995 as I started to dive into researching my genealogy, at the insistence of my grandmother, my mother told me that Patrick Murphy was not my real father, that my real father's name was Daniel Edward Coughlin.

-To my knowledge I have never met either man. A year after I learned about Coughlin I had a fairly brief conversation with him about family history. From that conversation I recalled both his parents had passed, and he had one brother he had little contact with. And that either his mother or grandmother had came from Portugal by way of Burmuda. Seeming like I'd hit a brick wall, I kind of put the genealogy on the back burner.

-Aug 2011 my mother died.

-Interest resurfaced after meeting my fiance, whose interest in genealogy and history spurred me in late 2007/early 2008 into doing a morbid google search for Coughlin's obituary to see if he was still alive (I'd found his wife Faye's facebook page and there was no mention of him, so I wondered). What I found was him mentioned in his [1] From there I learned his father's name, his mother's name and maiden name.

(From my phone call with Coughlin I got the impression he was wary about possible ramifications of me impacting his family life. My interest wasn't for anything but information regarding genealogy and health. I don't know if his 3 daughters have any notion of my existence, I'm pretty sure his wife knows, as she knew my mother (they may have even been friends as it is a small town). Recently I submitted DNA samples to both Ancestry and 23&me to see if I could find scientific evidence that I'm linked to the Coughlin's without having to impose on his life. But without a DNA sample from him, or one of his brother's sons (or some other direct male descendant for a Y-chromosome match) it's hard to "prove" he is my biological father. I suppose I should take them at their word, but then again, why did it take 31 years to reveal the truth to me? And growing up with my mostly single mom, she has a history of dating multiple men, so in my mine I need more proof to seal the deal. The 23&me results for Y-chromosome are corrupted, but the Ancestry DNA does show Iberian ancestry, so that adds some support to their word. Coughlin-277 00:43, 26 January 2015 (EST))

I noticed you uploaded a GEDCOM.
  • Consider reading discussions tagged as 'GEDCOM' in our forum, G2G

(After importing a large GEDCOM with multiple sources, I found that adding profiles by hand would have been more efficient. If you have a lot of sources for each profile, consider using the match function, but not the import.)
