Although he went by Ted at a later age, Ted's legal name was Teddy. He was named after Teddy Roosevelt, who visited the Rifle, Colorado area the year he was born. He vividly remembered seeing Halley's Comet in 1910. Ted grew up on the family ranch near Rifle. He contracted polio in 1920, but soaked in the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs pool for a summer, and regained the ability to walk with a slight limp. He married Leah Helen Wurts and they had two children. He did various jobs, but eventually formed his own construction company. He strip mined uranium in Utah and constructed and paved numerous roads and other structures throughout Colorado. After he retired, he and Leah first moved to Moab, Utah to be close to friends (Butch and Leona Christensen), but eventually moved to Sun City, Arizona, where he continued working part-time until he was in his 80s. When he was 83 years old (or so), he was on a ladder pruning a tree when he fell and broke his pelvis. He lived for several years after the accident, finally dying in Peoria, Arizona. His body was returned to Rifle for burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. (Firsthand knowledge of his granddaughter)
