Biography

James Coulter was born about 1727 in Sussex, Delaware, the son of William Coulter and Elizabeth Prettyman ^[1] He married Margaret Black. ^[2]

As of April 1763, James was a yeoman farmer in Sussex County, Delaware. He held his mother's Power of Attorney and was acting on her behalf to claim a portion of the estate of his uncle Robert Prettyman.

I am working on find out what were the names of the Coulter who came to America in the 1700s. The Coulter family owned their own ships. I was told that if the Captain of the ship brought his family aboard. That he did not have to list them with passengers of the his ship. So this means that our Coulter family could have been aboard not have been listed. The only I think that we can find out who was on this list is by look at the first names of the Coulter families in the time frame. The Coulters came from Dumfriesshire about the end of the seventeenth century, and were soon leading merchants. [1]

”The petition of James Coulter of Sussex, yeoman, by virtue of a power of attorney from Elizabeth Coulter late of sd. County but at present living in the Back Settlements)” setting forth that Elizabeth’s brother, “Robert Prettyman, late of the county afores’d, the younger, deceased, died intestate and in his minority." Robert Prettyman owned a112 acre tract in Indian River Hundred. Petition for division of Robert Prettyman’s lands.
