Biography
James was born in 1865. He is the son of Barney Countryman and Elizabeth Hardy. [1]

Notes
- In an 1899 directory, James is living with his father Barney and his step-grandmother Hester Easton Countryman (his Grandfather's second wife). In 1899, his father died, and in the 1901 census James is still living with Hester and his nephew Hugh (son of James' brother Barney Jr. who died in 1897). Hugh's brother Harvey is attending the Deaf School in Belleville at this time. James received some money from Hester's will; however nephews Hugh Lloyd and Harvey Bernard had to take James to court in 1928 to stop him from selling some of the inherited land which was left to Lloyd and Harvey. The court found in favor of Lloyd and Harvey. Florence Countryman Pyke remembers Uncle Jim leaving the area after the court case. Harvey moved into the house next to the cemetery while her father Lloyd got the farm.[3]
