Biography

Margaret is the daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay, of Powderham, Devon, the fifth son of Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon and his wife Margaret de Bohun.[1] Her mother is presumably Sir Philip Courtenay's wife, Anne Wake.

Her birth date is unknown, but it must have been before 28 January 1391, when she is named in the will of her paternal grandmother, 'Margaret de Courtney, Countess of Devon', who granted her 100 marks to increase her portion.[2]

Marriage

Margaret Courtenay married probably before 1402, and definitely before her father's death in 1406, Robert Cary, of Cockington, Devon, son of Sir John Cary, and Margaret Holway, as his first wife.[3]

They had two children;[3]

  1. Philip Cary;

#Joanna (Johanna) Cary, married William Ashford, of Ashford.[4]

Some sources name the mother of these two children as Robert Cary's second wife, Joan or Jane Hankford[4] but Philip at least would appear to be the son of Margaret Courtenay.[5]

Death

The date she died is also unknown, but it was probably about 1413 and definitely before October 1413

Research Notes

Name

In some secondary sources she is named Elizabeth, see for instance the Cary genealogy in The visitations of the county of Devon.[4] but this appears to be a mistake on Vivian's part, and there seems to be no reason to accept that she was known by both names.

Courtenay and Carey line to Armagh, Northern Ireland based on Sir Walter Raleighs plantation idea for Devon residents. Also Greenaway.

Courtenay-292 and Courtenay-222 appear to represent the same person because: For some reason this merge was stalled - either way the first name is recorded this is the same person & she's in Richardson's works.

She isn't in other lists of Philip's children. But assuming she is his, is there any reason she wouldn't also be the daughter of his wife, Anne Wake, who married him in 1378 and d. 1404? Or is that the wrong way to approach the question?

I think that the daughter of Philip Courtenay may have been recorded as both Elizabeth & Margaret.I just proposed a merge for 2 Philip Courtenay profiles with the following message:

Hi! In researching the wife of Robert Cary Cary-21 ...it seems that _Elizabeth_ may not be the recorded name of the daughter of Philip Courtenay who married Robert Cary & was the mother of his son Philip, although that's what the name the reference has ( http://thepeerage.com/p20695.htm#i206948 ) ... (Especially since the bio for Robert Cary at http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/cary-robert-1431 shows his wife as Margaret Courtenay & says he married the granddaughter of Hugh.)

sorry - I wasn't expecially clear when I said "husband, son"... I meant that the father's name for this profile (Philip) matches the son's name for De_Courtenay-79

De Courtenay-79 and Courtenay-292 appear to represent the same person because: information matches (husband/son)
