Edward Courtenay was the son of Edward Courtenay, a younger son of William de Courtenay, from which came the Earls of Devon, and Alice Wooton of Cornwall.
Edward Courtenay's wife was also known as "Margaret Jane Trethford," a variation on the spelling of her true maiden name: "Trethurffe". Genealogical records must be researched under both spellings. They were married in November 1529 in Ashton, Cornwall, England. Edward and Margaret had four children:
Edward Courtenay died about 1540, shortly after his daughter Katherine/Catherine Courtenay was born.
His wife, with four young children to raise, soon (1541) married local gentleman, Richard Buller, Esquire, of Shillingham, Cornwall, England. Their first child, Mary Buller, was born in 1542 and she married Sir John Wise I in about 1565.
