Biography

Edward Courtenay was the son of Edward Courtenay, a younger son of William de Courtenay, from which came the Earls of Devon, and Alice Wooton of Cornwall.

Edward Courtenay's wife was also known as "Margaret Jane Trethford," a variation on the spelling of her true maiden name: "Trethurffe". Genealogical records must be researched under both spellings. They were married in November 1529 in Ashton, Cornwall, England. Edward and Margaret had four children:

  1. William, b. 1530
  2. Edward, b. 1533
  3. Peter, b. 1535
  4. Katherine, b. 1539

Edward Courtenay died about 1540, shortly after his daughter Katherine/Catherine Courtenay was born.

His wife, with four young children to raise, soon (1541) married local gentleman, Richard Buller, Esquire, of Shillingham, Cornwall, England. Their first child, Mary Buller, was born in 1542 and she married Sir John Wise I in about 1565.

Courtenay-646 and Courtenay-491 appear to represent the same person because: wrongfully-added parents for Courtenay-646 have been removed; the man who married Margaret had the same parents as Courtenay-491, as written in original biography. No obstacles now to the merge. Thank you.

Chet, I have just completed the merge and done a bit of editing. You may want to check over what I have done.

Courtenay-646 and Courtenay-491 are not ready to be merged because: Looks like same person except there appears to be different parents.

Courtenay-646 and Courtenay-491 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and spouse and times. Different parents but one is unsourced.

If this is the Edward who married Margaret Trethurffe then his parents were Edward Courtenay and Alice Wotton. Margaret's duplicate has it right.

Two people mixed up? Possibly can be fixed by inserting an extra generation between this one and parents? But looking at the freepage source, I think not, so probably the parents should be disconnected.

The profile's parents match the Royal Ancestry citation given.

The wife matches the description given in the profile (and can be found on p.337 of Royal Ancestry, very close to the other reference).
