Peter COURTNEY is believed to have born between 1760-1780 in Ireland. [1]
Research Notes
Edmund (son of Peter) seems too old to be a sibling of James and Eliza, unless there are many more siblings and perhaps more than one marriage. The 1841 census says Edmund was b1791, but later records suggest 1781. Both still seem to fit if later records births are incorrect. (1851 census and death record). Edmund's death certificate indicates he was born in Mountcashel. (Mountcashel is a townland in County Clare, but Cashell is in Tipperary. Lord Montcashel is connected to County Cork and the Ballytrasna Cork Courtneys).
This person may possibly be the same as Peter Courtney m Garrett. Son of David of Ballinrobe, Mayo. These Ballinrobe Courtneys are connected to Shields. So are the family of Henry Courtney of Dublin whose family were residing in Holdenhurst, Hampshire at the time of the 1881 census. All three are possibly of the same family. Read more on my blog about the Courtney's of Holdenhurst.
Further testers are needed to confirm relationships back in Ireland. Can you help? If you are a male descendant, carrying the Courtney surname (or variant) please consider joining the FTDNA Courtney Y-DNA Project.
