Biography

Although Robert Courtney's mother may have been a Susanna Gray, it was not Susanna Gray of Plymouth, Massachusetts

Robert was born about 1697, likely in Delaware or Maryland. His first wife was a woman named Abigail, who died in Maryland in 1739. [1] Robert remarried, to a woman named Hannah Cook, in 1740. [2] [3] The family moved to Onslow County, North Carolina shortly after Robert remarried. [4] Robert received a grant of 320 acres of land on Half Moon Creek, Onslow County, on March 21, 1750. [5] Robert died about 1751. In his will he named sons John, Robert, Jonathan, and Rowlan, his wife, Hannah, daughter Phebe and her husband Richard Curtis. [6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

Robert of Onslow d 1751 has 29 male YDNA descendants who all match from his sons.

However John Courtney was not his father as his male line is of a different haplogroup.

Thanks! This great info. I will remove John as his father from my several trees. I am fine with removing his parents and will let my co-managers make the edits if they are willing.

We are finding DNA matches with the kits listed here for our direct ancestor, Robert Courtney AKA "Robert of Onslow" as we lovingly refer to him. Looking to join the administrators of these records to add valuable information as it comes up during research.

There is no documentary or DNA evidence to suggest the parentage of Robert Courtney of Onslow.

Nothing I have read researching John Coles and Susannas has even mentioned a first husband for Susanna Gray. It is unreasonable to suppose that Susanna Gray of Massachusetts married John Courtney, who lived and died in Virginia, also had a son Robert, who was b. in Delaware and died in North Carolina. Hearing no objections, I will disconnect this couple.
