Double Affliction - Rarely, in our professional experience have we been called upon to record two deaths in a family occurring within the short space of sixteen hours - an event that has plunged a household into unutterable grief, and made vacant the seats of two of its young and promising members. Sunday evening, about 5 o'clock, Miss Ellen E. Cowan, who has been suffering for some time past with inflammation of the lungs and bowels, calmly closed her eyes upon the scenes of this life and passed to the world eternal. While yet the tears of grief-stricken relatives and friends coursed down the cheek, Mr. John Cowan, her brother, yielded his spirit to the God who gave it, and the twain were buried in one grave on Tuesday, Rev. T.C. Carroll preaching the funeral sermon to a large concourse of sympathizing friends who had assembled to perform the last sad duties which humanity owes to its kind. Miss Ellen, was in her eighteenth year. Mr. John Cowan was a married man, and leaves a widow and three children. He married a daughter of Col. James Jarrett. He died of consumption in the 26th year of his age. They were both members of the Methodist Church, and children of Canada and Caroline Cowan, who have the sympathy of the community in their double bereavement.

John Adams Cowan died in 1875, his grave was moved to Riverside at a later date.
