Margaret "Maggie" Josephine Cowan was born on May 29, 1860, in Asheville, North Carolina, her father, Canada, was 36, and her mother, Mary, was 29. She had 15 siblings. She died on December 10, 1879, in her hometown at the age of 19 of pulmonary tuberculosis. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Asheville.
