James Cowan was born in Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland in about 1794/5. His death certificate[1], dated August 3rd, 1869, gives his age at death as 74. His stated age in the 1861 Scotland census[2] is 67. His parents were James Cowan and Margaret Johnstone.
He married Grizel (Grace) Waugh on 30 Jul 1819 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire, Scotland[3].
