Biography

Janet was born in about 1853 or 1854. She is the daughter of John Cowan and Robina (Wilson) Cowan.

She appears twice in the official records, in the 1861 and 1871 Scotland census.

In the 1861 census she appears at home with her parents and siblings at Clayhouses, Dryfesdale.

In the 1871 census she appears at Nether Murthat Cottage. The head of the house is her grandmother, Grace (Waugh) Cowan. Also present is Samuel Cowan, who is her uncle and not her father as the wording in the census return indicates. The 1871 census for her father, John Cowan, shows that Janet was not at home on the day of the census. She was out visiting her grandma and Uncle Sam.
