Biography

John, son of John Cowan and Agnes Paterson, was born on 4 December 1795 and baptised on 14 December 1795 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[1]

John married Hannah Robinson on 21 May 1823 in Prestwich, Lancashire, England.[2][3]

John and Hanna had at least 8 children:

  1. John Cowan, baptised on 28 July 1824 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[4]
  2. Richard Gretton Cowan, baptised on 24 September 1828 in Manchester, Lancashire, England; died an infant before 1833.[5]
  3. Matilda Cowan was baptised on 12 February 1830 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[6]
  4. Richard Gretton Cowan was baptised on 3 November 1833 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[7]
  5. Benjamin Patterson Cowan, baptised on 25 June 1837 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[8]
  6. Agnes Abigail Cowan was baptised on 4 September 1839 in Manchester, Lancashire, England[9]
  7. Mary Elizabeth Cowan, baptised on 21 Jul 1844 Lancashire, England[10]
  8. Jean Cowan was baptised on 20 October 1844 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.[11]

Research Notes

  • The Original profile Referenced an 1850 United States Census record for a John Cowan residing in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio, United States in the 1850 census John (age 55), Collier, was in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio, United States.[12], but closer examination suggests this is incorrect: the wife's Forename is listed as Jane, not Hannah and all but the eldest child are shown a born in Nova Scotia, Canada, between 1833 (Mary) and 1838 (Agnes). John and Hannah's daughter Agnes Abigail Cowan was baptised on 4 September 1839 in Manchester, Lancashire, England[9] not Nova Scotia. Mary was baptised on 21 July 1844 in Manchester, Lancashire, England[10], not 1833 in Nova Scotia. Hannah Robinsons death was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1855 in the Manchester district[13]; it is not likely that she or John ever resided in the United States of America. Graham-17201 23:01, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
  • The original profile gave a death date of 30 Sep 1859 in Libson, Grundy Co, Illinois, based on a Find-A-Grave memorial[14] that is unsourced, has no bio, no photo, no birth place and the age at death is given as 62 yrs and 9 months, which would give a birth date of January, 1797, not 4 December 1795. This memorial is not likely to be for John Cowan born 4 December 1795 in Lancashire, Scotland and likely died in Lancashire, Scotland. Graham-17201 23:27, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
  • There is a death certificate for John and Hannah's daughter Matilda[15] in Washington, United States that lists both her parents, but this should not be taken to indicate that the parents emmigrated to the US.Graham-17201 13:58, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Cowan-277 and Cowan-273 appear to represent the same person because: These two appear to intend to be the same person. One has lots of info and one has next to nothing.
