John was born on 16 March 1805 in Abbeville, South Carolina, USA. He was the son of Isaac Cowan and Jane Seawright.

When John was about 24 he married Sarah Brownlee Clinkscales in about 1830 in Old 96Th District, South Carolinas. The couple had 10 children: Isaac B. Cowan, James M.
