Jenney Cowen

Jane "Jenney" Cowen was the second child born to Peter Cowen and Mary "Polly" Merrill. She was born January 11, 1811 in Warren County (Simpson was formed in 1819), Kentucky. Jenney married Michael Holland about 1829 in Simpson County, Kentucky.

Jenney and her husband, Michael moved to Hickory County, Missouri in the early 1840’s, likely in 1842 with her mother, Mary and some of her siblings. In 1850, the Hollands' lived with the Manuel Mashburn family. Manuel was the brother of Jordan Mashburn (the brother in law of Jane Holland). At that time they had six children, four who were born in Kentucky and two born in Missouri.

Between 1850 – 1860 the Hollands moved to nearby Benton County, Missouri. They lived in or near the town of Cole Camp. The 1850 and 1860 slave schedules for Hickory and Benton Counties, Missouri, show that Michael owned two young female slaves during the 1850's.

Michael was killed by bushwhackers September 13, 1863. The will of Michael Holland, Benton Co., Missouri , dated October 20, 1855, probated August 17, 1867, names only his wife Jane.

Jenney is found in the Benton County Personal Tax List of 1868 with two pieces of personal property, listing numbers 1446 and 2632, value $2100; 2 horses $120; 4 cattle $45; 5 hogs $10; personal property $80. Her son, James M. is on the adjoining property, #2629. Thomas G. Holland is on property number 1122.

On the 1870 census, son Millard 16 yrs of age is still at home with Jenney. The value of Jenney’s real estate is listed as $2500 and personal property $450. [1]
