Church Records

Church membership
  1. The Records of the Brick Church, Marlborough, Monmouth Co., NJ, originally known as the Reformed Church of Freehold of the Navasink, begin in 1709 and show that in that year seven children of Willem Gerretse were already members of that congregation: namely, Cornelis, Pieter, Albert, Jan, Jacob, Neeltje (Nelke), and Sara. In 1717, two other children appear as members, Annetje (Autie) and Jacomina (Jockamiinke). It was not until 1721 that the church shows as members "Willem Ger Kowvenhoven and his wife," and since the wife, Jannetje (Janneke), appears alone on the list in 1723, it seems possible that Willem Gerretse died between 1721 and 1723.
Children's baptisms

Research Notes

  1. On the earliest surviving list of members of the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn 12 Se p 1660, appears the names of Willem Gerritse Van Couwenhoven, his first wife, and her parents.
  2. He was Magistrate of Brooklyn 1661,1662, and 1664. Willem Gerretse, on behalf of his first wife, was one of the three heirs to the Brooklyn grant of his father-in law, Joris Dicksen Brinckerhoff, and joined with the other heirs in selling this property on 16 Jan 1661.
  3. Steven Mix noted in a comment that "the death date [given by a merged profile] of January 3, 1662/63 from the Ancestral File is probably a confusion with the death date of his first wife, Aeltje. Also, he would not be alive for the birth of all of his later children by Jannetje. Most sources say instead that Willem died 1728, which makes much more sense."
  4. The existence of the original Bible of Willem Gerretse, with his own record of his marriages and the births of his children, states that he married 'Aeltien Joris' in the year 1660.[19][20] She was Altje, daughter of Joris Dickerson Brinckerhoff, and was the widow of Cornelis Matty (Mathiews). She died on 3 Jun 1663, and Willem Gerretse married 'Jannetie Peters' on 12 Feb 1665. Jannetje was the daughter of Peter Monfort. She was baptized as Jannetje on 8 May 1646 in the Dutch Reformed Church of New Amsterdam.

Could you please propose the merge in the usual fashion?

Ellen - hi. I didn't think I could because of its PPP status. However, now that I know differently, I've proposed the merge.

Cleaned and developed this profile up as best I could...more info and sources. It was a very confused profile that needed editing.

Looks like children from two different profiles were mixed together during a past bad merge of brothers: William and Jan. The children were realigned to proper parent...It is doubtful that sources were screwed up too badly as they were mostly LDS and Ancestry.com sources which are usually screwed up anyway. Have cleaned up obvious bad sources.

I tried to edit the bio 12-3-2016 but somehow my edits were undone; I couldn't make them "stick". Though I can't see any resetting of the biography, I think this is what might have happened. Conover, van Cowenhoven, and Gerretse are the name versions that were on the profile merged into this one.

Conover-155 and Couwenhoven-4 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles appear to represent the same person. Destination should be Couwenhoven-4 to better represent the Surname...van Couwenhoven or van Cowenhoven. Willem used van Cowenhoven for some baptisms.

Couwenhoven morphed into Conover in later generations.

Van Couwenhoven-53 and Couwenhoven-4 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. These matches have been reviewed by the New Netherland Settlers Merge Approval System, and the "Green" destination NNS profile is protected as PPP, and the "Merge Pending" profile is now ready and able to be merged into it. I saved the data to the bios. Alternate death from this is January 3, 1663 in Monmouth, Monmouth, NJ, but that is impossibly two years before his second marriage, and so is not worth preserving, other than in passing comment here. Thanks!

I'll leave the cleaning up of the bio to Liz or Steven; not because I'm lazy but because it is better or them to do it as they will do a better job of it than I will. Please feel free to remove this comment when the time comes or inform me to do so. Thanks!

Van Kouwenhoven-1 and Couwenhoven-4 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest paternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. I saved the data to the bio, so that it won't get lost in the merge. So please don't aggressively edit the bios without checking the resultant data first. This is a bit later than I like to be working on merges, because I am still concentratiing on the 1610s. But people keep shoving later descendant merges at me, and this is one of the older generations of ancestors that are getting overlooked in the process. So I wish everybody would please slow down with those later descendants, because I am not at all comfortable that the best decisions are being made there, when these older ones are still hanging out here undone. So I am trying to do a bit of triage work here with this merge first, before later descendants default. Thanks!
