Biography

Alexander was educated at Christ's College, Bishopsbourne, Tasmania and at John Young's School, Blackheath, Surrey, UK in classics and mathematics. He joined the Indian Army as a cadet in 1852 aged 16 and sailed from Southampton on the Headington, 20 Nov. He began active service as an ensign in the 35th Native Infantry and served in the Burmese War 1852-53. Promoted to Lieutenant 22 Oct 1856, he was transferred to the Madras Staff Corps. He commanded two companies during the greater part of the North Canara campaign (the Indian Mutiny), which extended from March to December 1858. He was promoted to brevet captain 10 Dec 1864, full captain 12 Sep 1866, major 10 Dec 1872 and lieutenant colonel 10 Dec 1878, with which rank he served in the Afghan war 1879-80. After promotion to colonel 10 Dec 1882, he served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87 in command of a brigade and conducted theadvance on Wuntho from the north. He was mentioned in despatches in 1887 and made a CB 2 Aug 1888. On 10 Dec 1890 he was placed on the Unemployed Supernumary List and returned to Tasmania, where he became commandant of the Tasmanian forces.
