The first merchant in Burgeo, Newfoundland was John B. Cox in 1835. Before this time business was conducted by trading vessels from Jersey Harbour and La Poile. In 1840 Nicolle and Company of Lapoile came to Burgeo and shortly afterwards the firm of Newman (of London) came from Harbour Breton. Newman Company built four large stores, a shop, an office and two cookrooms and employed forty-four people in 1859. By 1865 Nicolle and Company had failed and Newman Company had moved to Gaultois. They were succeeded by De Gruchy, Renouf, Clement and Company. A Co-operative store was started by Joseph Dicks in 1878[1].
From Joseph Small's 'Diary of Burgeo - 1925': "This house was built in the Forties by John B.Cox ther merchant (Old Room) for his father and mother but shortly after Mr. Cox sold his "Room" to Newman and Co. and went to P.E.Island and the old people went to Upper Burgeo. and lived and died with Lambert Forward Sr. who wife was a daughter of the old people...[2]."
