Biography

Mary (Cox) King lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina.
Mary was born 26 Feb 1800 and passed away 28 Sep 1881.[1]

According to the Find A Grave Memorial, the parents of Mary are uncertain. One family researcher believes that her father is a William Cox born about 1755-1770, who moved to Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee) and bought a farm on Sinking Creek, near where Mary's husband, Thomas Murray King, lived. [1] Elisha and Mary (Littler) Cox did have a daughter named Rebecca, but she was born on Nov 14, 1811 in Randolph County, North Carolina. [1]

Mary "Polly" Rebecca "Becky" Cox @14 married about 1814 probably in Washington County, Tennessee to Thomas Murray King @24. Their families lived fairly close together in the Sinking Creek area.

Thomas and Mary lived at least the first 5 years of their marriage in Campbell County, Tennessee where their first 4 known children were born.

About 1819 they moved their family from Tennessee to a part of lower Whitley County, Kentucky. Although Campbell County and Whitley County were in different states (TN & KY) they were in adjoining counties.

Their last 11 known children were born in the lower Marsh Creek area of Whitley County, Kentucky (which in 1912 become part of the newly created McCreary County, Kentucky).

In 1841 Mary and her husband Thomas were 2 of the founding members of the United Baptist Church of Christ. That church is still in existence today and is now called the Upper Marsh Creek Baptist Church located on Highway 1470.

Thomas and Mary moved again (probably in the mid-late 1840s) to the vicinity of what is now called King's Valley. It is thought that at one time Thomas owned more that 2,000 acres in the Pine Knot, Strunk and Marsh Creek areas. The land was eventually divided up among his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of their descendants still live on land that Mary and her husband once owned.

Mary and Thomas were married for 65 years and had at least 15 children:
