There is a Henry County Land Grant of 99 acres to a James Cox on 1 May 1794: "On the north branches of Smith's River, adjoining William Furon."[5]

James Cox was taxed in Patrick County in the years 1791-1794 on 200 acres received from Jnoa. Ward Campbell and 150 acres in the years 1795-1799. In the years 1795-1797, John Adams was taxed on 50 acres along the Smith River that he received from James Cox.[6]

A James Cox is found on the 1810 Patrick County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List.[7][8] On 1 Apr 1812, James Cox of Patrick County sold 50 acres of land to each of three of his older children for the nominal sum of $1, to Francis Cox on the north side of Smith River, to Jeremy Burnett (husband of Elizabeth) on the south side of Smith river, and to Randolph Cox on the north side of Smith river adjacent to Francis Cox.[9]

James Cox is found on the 1820 and 1830 Patrick County, Virginia U. S. Federal Census. The 1820 Patrick County, Virginia Census suggests that James Cox and his children continued to live near one another in this area as they are listed sequentially on the census page (Francis Cox, James Cox, Jeremiah Burnett Jr, Randolph Cox). The other entries on this page are not in alphabetical order, making it likely that the enumerator listed each family in the order he visited their homes.[2][10][11]

In Apr 1826, James Cox sold land on Goblintown Creek to his son Francis for $50.[12] On 26 Sep 1831, James sold another 50 acre parcel to Joseph Cox along Goblintown Creek, adjacent to Francis Cox, for $300.[13]

James Cox in Patrick County was the named guardian of Margaret Cox in 1828 [14] and 1831.[15] This is not daughter Margaret who was a married adult, but the daughter of his son Erskine. In Mar 1827, James Cox sold land for $190 to settle a debt of Erskine's estate. [16]

James probably died around December 1832. He was dead by 2 Jan 1833 when land was sold by the curator of his estate: "This indenture made this second day of January one thousand and eight hundred and thirty three between James Cox of the county of Patrick and state of Virginia by his curator Joseph Cox of the one part and Daniel R. Cox of the said county and state of the other part."[17] He is buried in Billy Boyd's Cemetery, Endicott, Franklin County, Virginia.[18]

Research Notes

A James Cox served during the Revolutionary War under Col. Abram Penn in James Tarrant's company, Henry County militia.[19] He marched to the assistance of General Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Recognized as a DAR[20] and SAR Patriot. Descendants of multiple men named James Cox claim him including this profile, James S. Cox (1760-abt.1828) of Pittsylvania County, and James Cox from Henry County. (Naomi Ann Cox (1814 - 1884)...p. 20; FamilySearch Book: 420483)

Men named Cox and Cocke who served in the Revolutionary War from Virginia:

There are two entries for James Cox in the 1782-1785 census enumeration for Pittsylvania County. White souls are 5 and 7. One likely represents him, the other James S. Cox. United States. 1908. Removed linked parents, William Cox-14206 and Carey-3097, as there is no evidence for this other than an unsourced Ancestry.com family tree. James was not listed in the will of William Cox which would have been very unusual, as he was a child at the time. If there is evidence for this family link, please add.
