Biography

Jonathan B. "J.B." Cox was born in 1807 in Tennessee.[1] He married Lucy Nunnery about 1828, and they had at least nine children, most of them are listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. J.B. is also listed as a farmer and is also on two of the U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules in Agriculture in 1850[2] and 1870[3] He was on four Early Tax Lists of Benton Co., TN, in 1837, 1838, 1839, and 1842, but did not own land. He could have been a share cropper, a homesteader, or worked his mother-in-law's land. In 1849, he acquired two pieces of land: the first was on 1 May 1849, Land Warrant #554 had 281 1/2 acres and was bordered by Wm. Barnes and Rebecca Nunnery (his mother-in-law);[4]the second was on 10 Nov 1849, Land Warrant #10131 had 116 acres and was bordered by N. Nunnery, her brother.[5]

Lucy and J.B. must have divorced by 1870,[6] because both of them are living in separate houses, with Lucy living in KY. About 1875, J.B. marries Martha Ann McClure, because she is listed as his wife in his will.[7] He dies in Aug 1876, and it is not known where he is buried.
