She was christened 14 Apr 1793 in Kingston-upon-Thames.[1]

Sir Reginald Blomfield in his rather concise and interesting missive Á Blomfield Family describes Dorothy as "a shrewd and rather hard old lady and goes onto say she must have been a very attractive girl when she was painted by harlow in The Proposal. hers is the head on the left, the other two are portraits of her frienhds, Lady Dymoke and Mrs Blunt"

Marriage One

Dorothy Cox married Barrister Thomas Kent on 20 Aug 1816 in Hildersham, Cambridge.[2]They had one son; Thomas Fassett Kent (1817-1871)[3]

Dorothy's husband Thomas Kent passed away in 1818.

Marriage Two

The widow Kent then married the Reverend Rector of Chesterford and later Bishop of London, [Charles James] Blomfield on 17 December 1819. A marriage notice was published in the Norfolk Chronicle on 24 Dec 1819.[4] Charles was also a widower, and had one surviving daughter from his first marriage.

Family Life

Dorothy's spouse became Archdeacon of Colchester in 1822, and two years later was raised to the bishopric as Bishop of Chester. In 1828 he was appointed a Privy Counsellor and translated becoming Bishop of London on 23 Aug 1828. The family then resided at Fulham Palace, the principal residence of the Bishop of London. His health began to fail, and he resigned his bishopric in 1856 - although he retained Fulham Palace as his residence until his death on 5 Aug 1857.

In 1861 Dorothy Blomfield (age 68, Fundholder) lived at Lansdowne Place in Richmond, Surrey with three of her children: Henry (35, Commander RN 1/2 Pay), Lucy E (30), and Dorothy (25), two visitors: John Cox (70, Rector of Fairstead Essey) and Sarah Baston (37, Invalid Nurse), and six servants.[8] In the 1861 census Dorothy (age 68) was the head of household in Richmond, Surrey, England.[9]

Death and Burial

Dorothy Blomfield passed away 12 Feb 1870, aged 76 years. Her death was registered in Richmond in the first quarter of the year.[10]

Will and Probate

The Will of Dorothy Blomfield (late of Richmond in the County of Surrey); Widow deceased, who died 12 February 1870 at Richmond aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Thomas Fassett Kent of 29 Cambridge-square in the County of Middlesex Esquire and the Reverend Frederick George Blomfield of 7 Lancaster-gate Hyde Park in the County of Middlesex aforesaid Clerk Rector of St. Andrew Undershaft in the City of London the Sons the Executors. 7 March. Effects under £8,000.[11]

Obituary

An obituary was published in the Norfolk News on 19 Feb 1870.[12]
