Hardy Cox born about 1856 in Rhea County Tennessee Oldest child of Mat (Matthew) and Jane (Phillips) Cox. In a newspaper clipping from May 10 1899 in Crossville Newspaper under Crab Orchard news: "Hardy Cox died at his home near Grassy Cove Monday morning. He was thought to have been poisoned" In the same newspaper under Local news it has "Hardy Cox, who lived on the mountain near the Cove, died Monday, of inflammation of the brain, after an illness of only a few days. The attack was thought to have been brought on by hard work. Dr. W.S. DeGolia was called, but the patient was beyond relief. The deceased was a hard working and industrious citizen and leaves a wife (Sarah Boles Cox) and several children.
